365

Starting today, 1.1.09 I'm going to attempt a picture a day for 365 days. Sounds easy for a photographer, right? Unfortunately I spent many of my days chasing, cleaning and running errands which leaves a brain a bit scattered to remember to grab a snapshot of...nothing. But when the camera IS out I have 4G of images to sort through. So, I'm trying 365- one image at a time. Not 40 shots to pick from, not perfect images- just snapshots of our lives as we tackle each day. I'm sure many of them won't be too exciting :)

1.
Today we decided to take down the Christmas Tree. It took us a few hours to organize the ornaments, collect holiday decorations from around the house and clean up pine needles but it's done. Well, except for Lili's little tree but that's easy to take down and is providing a lovely little night light for now.

Happy Holidays

And oh, was it. We had a great holiday with our nephew, Scott's sister, and his mom and step-dad. As hectic as it is there is something so right about a house full of family on a winter holiday. Jax was celebrating his first Christmas, as was Kyle.

Treasures in the Stockings
They each got new aprons and race cars- Lili got her first piece of chocolate- she wasn't a fan- yet. If she's anything like her mother that sweet tooth will kick in fairly soon :) They were all fans of the traditional oranges, though.

Jax's first stocking

Lili has a Giraffe bank that she got from her Mee Maw for her second birthday. Mee Maw always remembers to send nickels to feed the Giraffe, which Lili loves to do. She also sent some yummy dried mango treats in one of the four (!) boxes that she sent.

But it's true what they say...No matter how big or fancy the present, these kids are just happy with the box.

Or in this case, the bubble packing.

Revealing Questions- from Jessica

Revealing quesitons from Jessica
Bath or Shower?
Dog or Cat?
Creamy or Chunky?
Morning or Night?
Chocolate or Vanilla?
Paper or Plastic?
1.) Shower. I could stand there and waste water for longer than I care to admit. If you've met our shower, you'd understand. I also am one of those people that actually uses her soaker tub, though it seems most people just use it as a dust collector. Lili likes to get in with me and create bubble mountains :)
2.) Dog. We have a dog, who's crazy around new people but most of the times is pretty chill for a small dog. I had an awesome cat when I was growing up that you could carry around like a baby, cuddle with you, talk to and he could use the toilet but that was the only cat I've loved. The rest of them tend to be too skiddish and hairy for me. I hate cat hair.
3.)Creamy. If your buying regular peanut butter, though my favorite is the stuff from the Farmer's Market has natural chunks in it- but it's still different than straight up chunky.
4.) Night. I'm more productive in the mornings after a night's sleep (what is that??!) but right now I love night because it is the only time I get to spend with my husband and don't have to chase around kiddos ;)
5.) Vanilla. Yup. Yum, yum.
6.) Reusable bags. I'm like Jessica, though and often forget, so I tend to not accept bags and push the whole cart up to the car and load them into my bags there. Why is that so hard to remember sometimes?
What about you guys???

Oh Tannenbaum

I know I'm a bit late with this post, but as long as it's before Xmas it's not TOO late, right?
At the Kidman Tree Farm- Scott was trying to find the biggest tree that they had...

What we got- just kidding :) This is Lili's tree, and was actually our first tree ever, back in our tiny one bedroom apartment in NJ. Now Lili decorates it every year, which typically means 47 ornaments on one branch. She also has her little trains on a mini track around the base, such fun for a 3 year old :)

And the big ole' tree. It feels like Macy's up in this joint!

Bad Parenting 201

Apparently I could do an entire blog on bad parenting moments...

Lili had a bath tonight. She was refusing at first, which was odd because typically she loves any excuse to wash her cars. I enticed her with the bait of a big bubble bath in mama's soaker tub, which of course worked like a charm and she stayed in long after I had gotten out and she was uber pruney. So we did jim jams and stories and it wasn't until after she went to bed that I looked into the recently drained tub...

The thing is, we used to bath her every night as part of our bedtime routine. Of course, there was just one of her and two doting parents so... :) Once her eczema reared it's head we stopped bathing her every night, and once Jax came along we got REALLY lax about it. As in, when we give her a sniff and she stinks, we do some rough math ("did she get a bath last week? What day is it again?") to decide if we can't avoid it any longer. Scott and I both noticed how stinky she was today and, um, by the looks of the tub we MAY be getting a bit too lazy on this matter. It's not like it's the middle of summer and she just got back from a sand pit or anything. This is middle of winter dirt. On a girl. Yikes.

bad parenting 101

We had a long drive home from Indiana yesterday. It should be about 7 hours, but we had an extra 3 hours thanks to the ice. Driving 15 miles/hour on the highway is no fun, especially when the wind starts blowing the van across the lanes. Anyway, Jax was overtired and sick of being in his seat. He didn't want to nurse or calm down for anything. I was frustrated, tired and ready to ride on top of the van like cargo instead of inside with all the screaming. Scott pulled off at a rest stop and took Jax inside to try to get him to sleep. As soon as he left the car Lili said, "Mama, it's okay to be frustrated but next time just say, 'Dadda I need some help' okay?"

Cue me crawling under the seat in shame.

This brilliant, sensitive, exhausting 3 year old had better perspective on the situation than her mama.

First Foods

Jax had his first food on Saturday, his six month birthday. That's when Lili had her first food, so I thought picking the same age date would make it easier to remember 20 years from now. Though, I think he may have been ready a smidge earlier and her WAAAAAAAY later. Avocado. Yum. He seemed to do well, and be interested, though not quite sure what to do with that interest. I was just excited to see that after all the toy grabbing that has him leaning a bit towards a lefty, it really looks like he may be lefty- check out all the mush on his left hand and nothing on his right! Of course, may be jinxing myself just by saying it, but a girl can hope, right?

On another note, if you ask Scott was Jax's first food was, this is his reply...

Courtesy of mama attempting to read a magazine while Lili and dada went exploring and Jax quietly entertained himself during our 3+ hour layover...

Oops.

The Wedding

We had a great time in Arizona for Jen's wedding. The bachelorette party was at Diana Madaras' house and wow, what a place. We had a splendid time shaking our tummies for the bellydancing and the food was amazing. On Friday we had the BBQ and rehearsal both of which went well despite my having to leave a smidge early to nurse Jax. Thankfully it was less than 5 miles away and he was happy with his sister, Scott and Mee Maw. Overall everything went smoothly on Saturday as well, despite my just about losing it during pictures. In my defense though, I did have to run from the 4th floor down to the first floor and across the pool/courtyard area 3 times in heels to help get the kids ready, was way behind on time, and we were trying to convince an extremely reluctant 3 year old to pose nicely for family pictures BEFORE the ceremony (meaning massive time crunch so that guests don't see the bride hanging out outside in her dress). Sooooo, Lili isn't in any of the family pics and I'm mildly guilt ridden. Oh well. Once the family pictures were done the ceremony was beautiful, the pics in the desert should be amazing and the reception was a blast. Food was super yummy and overall we had a great time and feel so fortunate to have been included in such an important time for Jen and Calvin. Love you guys!

Halloween

Something weird here in Iowa, we don't trick or treat on Halloween. I have no idea why, or when it all started but they do a Beggar's Night before Halloween and it involves everyone having to tell jokes for their candy. Painful. I hated having to do that kind of thing as a kid. I also hated having to hound all my neighbors for fundraisers. But that's another topic...
As weird as it is, they do some fun things for the kids around here. We had trick-or-read at the library with stories, treats (no candy) and three showings of The Great Pumpkin on Tuesday. Thursday night was Beggars Night and Lili got so much loot she was able to get enough cash to trade for a new train! She's super excited about it. We also had a great time at Howells Tree Farm today. We got some yummy pie pumkins and Lili and I made a pie. Yum!

Justin Roberts

So, Justin Roberts. Super fun songs for kids, that aren't annoying for parents to listen to (over and over and over and over...) and great for dancing around like crazy. One of our local API leaders, Laurie, introduced us to him and told us about a free concert he was holding at one of the local malls. Lili was a bit apprehensive about sitting on the floor (aka toddler moshpit) with the other kids but had a blast dancing around in the back with me. She also didn't want to pose for pictures with Justin or Liam, but begged that we listen to her new CD on the ride home. We were definitely surprised to have brought the littlest super fan, though- Jax was IN LOVE when Justin was singing Pop Fly! No joke, he was cracking up, dancing all around and trying to leap out of my arms during that song. We had a great time and love his music, check out his fun videos on youtube. :)

Itty Bitty Wedding Clothes

When we started looking for clothes for Jax and Lili for Jen's wedding over the summer we had a difficult time finding anything that was both dressy enough and cool enough for Arizona in November. All the dressy stuff that we knew would be coming out around this time of year would be too Christmas-y and layered, and we apparently missed the boat on any of the spring/Easter markdowns. So I made a little dress for Lili and a bow tie and vest for Jax- his shirt and cargo pants we got on clearance at Children's Place. I thought it would be easy but really struggled finding a pattern for boy dress clothes- Burda was on the only decent one we found (and those never go on the $.99 sale), but the sizing is completely screwed up, and even though they had translated instructions they might as well have left those out. I ended up customizing Lili's dress to a size 2T on top and a 4T length. Jax got a completely made up bow tie (the one in the pattern was really weird and skinny) and a 6 month length for the vest but almost cut in half width wise to make it fit. I have no idea why the sizes were so screwed up- oh well. Now I'm off to finish a few more nappies (I don't want to have to do laundry more than once at the hotel), a dress for me, add a sleeping hood to the tall Mei Tai and then I think I can actually clean up the sitting room. Woop Di Do!

Trees...

Trees. I miss my trees. One of the hardest things for me about moving to the middle of the country is losing my trees. Yes, we do have trees here. But, no, it's just not the same. We're landscaping today (aka giving away our plants via craigslist) and it's seriously making me miss our lack of landscaping issues growing up. We had to deal with alot of sandy soil, but our yard was mostly moss, we had thousands of trees and it felt as if our house was nestled into a cozy little nook of trees. Thick trees in front of the house and even thicker trees in back. And we backed up to preserved land, so it was miles of hills for exploring, sledding, digging, climbing...
*Side note- OMG, Jen I think my favorite thing about your house was that cleared out area in the woods where we used to play house! Do you remember that?? It was just raked out dirt, trees and sticks and things but it totally transformed into a playhouse. I don't know why I've been thinking about that so much lately, maybe because I'm sad that Lili doesn't have that and she is just at that awesome age! Out here everyone plops those Step Two plastic playhouses in the middle of their flat, naked backyards. So not the same...*

Scott accepted a transfer from his Philadelphia office to the midwest for alot of reasons- change of pace, try somewhere new, but the biggest of all was the cost of living. We knew it was important for our family that I stay at home when we decided to have children. So we up and moved into a brand new house in a state Scott had been to for about 5 hours and that I'd never stepped foot in. (And in those five hours that Scott was here, he had an interview at a local brewery and saw a woman walking around downtown in a velour blue cowprint pantsuit. That was the extent of his experience in the state.) We had just under 48 hours to find a house and had no idea where anything was, which town was what or how we were going to go through closing, inspections and all that jazz from over 1000 miles away. So after looking at about 50 homes we decided to go with the "young" neighborhood suggested to us, that offered a new build because we thought that would have the least amount of bumps in the road since we had so much to do from a distance. We've been here for 4 years now, and I still feel the same way that I did when we first moved into our first house- like I'm in a hospital gown with my bare bottom hanging out. The back of our house just feels so NAKED. I can see our neighbors, they can see us. Our yard is just a big, open, flat space- perfect for a pool (though in a state that spends more than half of the year freezing it's bottom off it's not a great selling point)or swingset or...growing corn. We have trees, but they still seem so far away from me. Driving down the streets in our old neighborhood it felt as though you could reach out of the car and touch the trees- even on 295 or driving down to the shore the trees are right off of the highway. Here they are mostly in clumps off of the highway, in older neighbors, or planted akwardly in new yards. I actually heard one person complaining about having trees in his yard because of having to rake leaves- he had ONE tree in his 1/4 acre lot! Are you kidding me? I don't think I'll ever get to a point (nor do I want to) where I'll really feel like I'm at home without my trees. driving home in NJ

Pumpkin Patch

Normally we have to drive 45 minutes to get to the cool pick your own places- Wills Family Orchard, Berry Patch Farms, Howell's Nursery- to get apples and pumpkins and all that good stuff. I was browsing around and found this fabulous pick your own pumpkin patch right in our little town! Less than 5 miles away, in fact. Score! They had a huge pumpkin patch, corn pit, animals, mazes, and all that fun stuff. It was a Pumpkin Paradise! Okay, that's not original. That's their name. Williamson Pumpkin Paradise. Fun, fun, fun!

Happy Babies

Man, it is so fun to be around happy babies. Easy going, always smiling, giggling, laughing, drooling full of fun babies. Jax in particular, not that I'm biased. But geez, he is such a happy baby! It's a good thing he doesn't sleep or else I'd be way to tempted to make lots more already...

Hundreds and Hundreds...

Lili has been counting and knowing her ABC's for well over a year, but we entered new territory today. The whole family was driving to the grocery store and on the way Lili yelled out, "Mama, Daddy guess what I saw- I see hundreds of butterflies!" Scott and I looked at each other then asked her again, "How many?" to which she replied, "hundreds." We turned around (at a stoplight, not on the highway) and asked her how many one hundred was- she proceeded to flash "tens" multiple times and said, "this many." I can see where this is going..."I need hundreds of legos, I want hundreds of blueberries..." So there ya go. Hundreds.

new videos

a couple new videos...

Lili singing from the Kazoo book. I had chased her around the house with the camera before setting it on the steps and *hoping* it was recording... It's a long one, she had to finish the whole book, you know. Like her outfit? Yup, she dresses herself all the time now. She has been dressing herself for about a year, but in the past 3 months or so has decided to refuse wearing what I suggest. She has her own fashion ideas, thank you very much. I love seeing what she picks :) And she's moving her mouth weird because she has about 8 lbs of chapstick on her mouth. For some reason she thinks she can't move her lips once she puts it on- like she's full of novacaine or something. And pardon the coughing, we've had quite a sick week around here...

A fav of the grandma's...Lili is a great big sister- changing nappies, carrying Jax in her pouch (because "he likes to be weared!"), singing to him, reading to him, and patting him. My favorite part is the last 10 seconds when he cries and she gets a new book and holds his hand again... :) Mee Maw says I should make them sit down and watch this one when they are fighting preteens...

4 months old

My baby turned 4 months old yesterday, and started sitting today. If only he didn't have an amazing and wonderful big sister to watch and learn from then maybe I could squish him into a new baby just a little bit longer...

Bugs Bugs Bugs

Being around a three year old is the coolest sometimes. She LOOOVES her some bugs. Dead ones, live ones, big ones, smalls ones, any kind of bugs she can find. And sometimes she spots the really amazing ones, like the huge praying mantis that was on the back of our house. I love taking the time to look at bugs with her. Though, I do wish she wouldn't end up killing most of them (some intentionally out of curiousity, others unintentionally out of curiousity...) and putting them in the truck of red speedy race car. It's not fun finding a dead bug/wet sawdust combo in the trunk after a few weeks...
